The Challenge

Before LA Wallet, every Louisiana state-issued credential was entirely physical. Driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations, Real ID, Medicaid cards, hunting and fishing permits, concealed carry licenses, and vaccine cards were easy to lose, time-consuming to replace, and difficult to manage day to day. There was no unified digital solution for residents and no secure way for authorities, venues, or TSA to verify identity in real time.

At the same time, the state faced increasing issues with fake IDs. Visual checks alone were unreliable, and there was no trusted mechanism to authenticate an ID directly against the state’s database. Louisiana needed a mobile-first identity platform that could securely unify all state-issued credentials, prevent fraud, and scale to millions of residents while meeting strict legal and compliance requirements.

The Design Solutions

I helped design LA Wallet from the ground up as the nation’s first approved digital driver’s license app, working closely with Envoc and state stakeholders to create a single, secure digital wallet for Louisiana residents.

At the core of the experience is a real-world wallet interaction model, where licenses and permits stack vertically and expand when selected, allowing users to quickly preview and access the credential they need. I redesigned the add-license and replacement flows to reduce friction and eliminate unnecessary steps, making it easy for residents to manage credentials without office visits or paperwork.

To address fraud and verification, I designed VerifyYou and Scan Mode, combining biometric security with a continuously rotating QR code tied directly to the state database. The QR code refreshes every second and displays alongside the state-issued photo, making IDs nearly impossible to fake while enabling fast, trusted verification for law enforcement, TSA, bars, casinos, and other authorities.

Effortless Digital Identity Management

Collaborating closely with the development team, I designed the digital driver’s license feature to be as intuitive and practical as possible. Users can seamlessly access detailed information, including license type, ID, and barcode, with a user-friendly interface. The inclusion of both light and dark modes ensures accessibility and convenience, making digital identity management practical and efficient.

In collaboration with the team, I reimagined the TSA integration to streamline the user experience. By refining the interface and simplifying the language, I ensured that users could quickly verify their identity with minimal friction. The Results

LA Wallet transformed how Louisiana residents access and manage their identity, becoming the trusted digital identity platform for over 2 million residents statewide. Users gained a secure, always-available alternative to carrying physical credentials, significantly reducing the risk of lost IDs and replacement delays.

For authorities and venues, LA Wallet introduced a real-time verification system that dramatically reduced fraud and increased confidence during identity checks. The platform expanded into TSA acceptance and federal-level recognition, setting a national precedent for how state-issued credentials can be delivered securely, reliably, and at scale.
